Gagit travels to London to have dinner with the newlyweds, having missed the wedding party. After much discussion, we decide to go to a local place near their home so we can enjoy some pre-dinner libation and not have to travel far. We have the Dom Perignon Rose with some of the lemon flavored olives, Mrs. Gagits favorite and walk over to the restaurant. The chef owner has been trained at St. John by the Offal king, Fergus Henderson, the master of nose to tail food.
We are seated and greeted by our Brazilian waiter Pele, who brought us a bottle of Sancerre that we ordered to start. However, when we asked him to explain a few dishes he was completely lost, in fact he was so confused whether one dish was meat or fish and while, he was trying to figure it out when he and we were rescued by the hot server Carolyn, see picture, who made the rest of the meal super pleasant and truly professional. The starters we choose were Duck Hearts on Toast for me, and the newlyweds had Sweetbreads and Green Beans and a special raw fish to share, pictures also above. The hearts were cooked to perfection, although they could have used a little more flavor, while my guests starters were spot on.
On Carolyn’s recommendation, I ordered a bottle of Albarina, since the Sancerre was a bit young and not crisp enough for my taste. This bottle was just right to enjoy our mains, all shown above. I had the Calves Liver, Tommie the Pork Belly on Lentils, and Harold, the Pigeon. My Calves Liver was very ordinary, should have had the Lamb Brains, but the Pork Belly was on the verge of spectacular and the Pigeon again spot on.
On to dessert, on Carolyn’s advise we ordered the Blood Orange Jell and a Chocolate mousse although, I really wanted to order the Spotted Dick, that Mrs. Gagit so desires. The Blood Orange Jell with Blood Oranges on the side with vanilla ice cream was again spot on.
Let the Truth be Told, although this restaurant, as St. John, changes its menu daily as it serves nose to tail food, you have to come back often to get the whole animal, no testicles this night lol. The server Carolyn, elevated the experience of Hereford Road to one that I might return for the part of my choice, or even Mrs. Gagits, and we all know what that is, but the night was one celebration of Gagit and the newlyweds and in that regard was spot on.
