Gagit and AR are in Buenos Aires and are challenged by Argentina Dave to visit one of the best steakhouse in BA,that is the best that the locals enjoy.Although Gagit is not a fan of Argentina steak and has told all the Egullet gang that if they want to eat steak in BA ,Cabana La Litas is worth the experience. This is almost sacrilage to the locals for overpaying for steak is a crime in BA,although the atmosphere at Cabana is a tourist attraction and should be visited by tourists like Joe,s in Miami for Stone Crab. Tonight though, we meet Dave at El Probe Luis and are like locals enjoying and rating the steak.
We take a taxi to the restaurant and drive through the chinese area of Belgrano and wonder if this restaurant is worth the trip. We pull up to this packed loud and impressive red building and we now feel we are going to enjoy this night.We step inside and the first thing we see the heart of the restaurant the grills, shown above,we are then met by the hostess and led to the famous or infamous Argentina Dave. On the way we see rows and rows of signed football jerseys on the wall,see above,this place has real charm.We meet Argentina Dave and sit down and tell him to bring it on.
Dave has set up with the Luis , the owner, shown above and the real star of the night.We order a Argentina red wine of course, St. Felicien 2006 by Caetana and less than 20 bucks here. This same wine was almost double at Cabana. We start with a chorizo,shown, grilled to juicy perfection.Next, as shown, sweetbreads with lemon wedges to enhance the flavor , they are without a doubt to me the best I have ever tasted.Next , a special dish that Luis prepared for us , a Liver sausage, shown and spectacular at best since I love Liver,and now in the Gagit Hall of Fame .Now the pinnacle of the night, delivered by Luis , not steak but cow, as shown,about 36 ounces of medium rare rib eye.I take the first bite and although a little rare for me ,also shown, this is almost mooing at every bite.It is juicy and fatty to enhance the flavor but to me it is almost to rare and no where as tasty or soft as the porterhouse I raved about at Wolfgang,s.Argentina Dave , explained to me that this is there staple food and this is the best interpertation of meat. He finishes all his steak , we give up about three quarters though,even with another half bottle of wine to try to get it all down.
We are full and of course need some Lemoncello and Macchiatto to recover.Our gracious waiter, Marco ,as shown above, brings it over maybe three times over, lol.I need to get a special El Pobre Luis shirt that Luis presents to me as guest of honor. As we leave we shake hands and are hugged by the waiter, kissed by the hostess, and stare at awe at the two most famous signed shirts on the wall, as shown, the famous #10 from Argentina and # 8 from Brazil.
Let the Truth be Told, I now get it in thanks to Argentina Dave and Luis. This is an experience in eating with friends and neighbors , the steak the common bond not the star. This is not the tourist experience that Cabana offers. The bill here for the three of us was $86.00 about half again what Cabana would be .I of course thank you Dave for the experience but next time in BA lets go for the Paku.
