The Miami branch of this New York landmark has finally opened and Gagit has to see how it measures up to his experiences at the NYC original that he visited many times in the early 80s. The setting could not been chosen better, the hip and new cool Mary Brickell Village, with many new restaurants and shopping. The restaurant is nicely situated on a corner and the motif is certainly uplifting for the new yuppie crowd. We were seated right on time for our reservation in the almost full restaurant at 7pm at night.Upon seating our waiter Pedro,Cuban for Fernando, greeted us and offered to get us our favorite drinks ,for this night,Marguiritas ,just the regular way for us although the house speciality is Pomagranite.
When Pedro returned with our drinks made perfectly,we ordered the house speciality Gaucamole prepared fresh at the table with freshly baked chips. The dish is prepared and served in a special clay pot ,shown above ,a busboy prepares the dish with fresh Avacado, onions, tomatoes, and there special herbs ,and lo and behold the dish tasted the same as it did 25 years ago, it did .The picture above shows the dish empty, Gagit was so busy eating by the time he took picture dish was empty.
We now order the mains from this extensive Mexican menu, mostly developed for young American tastes.Within 5 minutes of our order, the food arrived at the table ,is it really ours we ask Pedro. The answer is a dissapointing yes but it is at least hot. Mrs Gagit ordered the special shortrib dish that consistant of three big ribs cooked to perfection and served with a mestiza sauce.tomatoes and chipotie and a mexican pepper sauce. Michy should copy this sauce for her so called shortrib dish with a sauce that cannot be anything but storebought bottled sauce for it is embarrasing in a restaurant of that so called quality.Mary Mary ordered the Buon De Pollo ,soft corn tortillas ,pulled chicken, chihuaha cheese, roasted peppers, served with a poblano cream sauce, a really nice dish catering to American tastes.Marys partner order the equivalent of skirt steak and shrimp ,Arrachera Con Camerones in casserole form topped off with a queso sauce with a little bite , again a nice dish for American taste.Gagit not to impressed with these Americano tastes just ordered Enchiladitas De Pollo, two enchiladas with pulled chicken topped with mole de xico sauce, nice but not authentic.
We were served so fast on the mains that we were afraid to order dessert for we did want dessert in less than 5 minutes for we needed time to digest our main course. The check arrived just as fast from Pedro and $50 person was reasonable for this food.
Let the Truth be Told,Rosa Mexicano has not changed much from the one restaurant in New York, they have now expanded its Yuppie Mexican to many cities ,featuring its Guacomole and so called Mexican dishes. However, to someone like Gagit ,a worldwide foodie, Rosa Mexicano is the equivalent to Mexican as PFChangs is to Chinese, ethnic food for Gringo tastes.
